Finished wooden deck with railing in a backyard

Deck Staining and Refinishing in Sussex County

The grey deck. The one that was beautiful for two years and then wasn't. A deck in this climate is the hardest-working exterior surface on a house because it takes sun and standing water on the same horizontal plane.

What's included

  • Deck cleaning and brightening.
  • Stripping failed finish.
  • Sanding.
  • Board replacement where boards are beyond saving.
  • Fastener correction.
  • Railing and stair refinishing.
  • Staining or sealing.

Why deck finishes fail

Most deck finishes fail because the deck was coated while the wood was still holding moisture, or because the previous finish wasn't fully removed. Prep is most of this job. A deck that gets stripped and dried properly holds its finish for years longer than one that got power-washed on Saturday and stained on Sunday.

On power washing

Too much pressure on softwood decking raises the grain and does damage that shows through the finish. We use the pressure the wood can take, no more. It's slower, and it's the difference between a finish that lasts and one that doesn't.
